Asking Big

Sometimes the Spirit whispers, “Ask Me for something big.”

Sometimes I do that. Other times I only half respond, afraid I’ll get my hopes up.

For the last several months we’ve been praying about what the next few years will hold for our family. We’ve anticipated several large needs and I’ve sensed the Spirit whispering, “Invite Me to show off. Ask Me to wow you.” I’m not sure if I ever did it. The invitation just harbored in my heart, a quiet assurance He would come through, but not enough belief to come right out and claim His abundance.

Today I got a call that one of those significant needs will be met. Unexpectedly, generously, and perhaps years before I really felt the need. It’s been given. My Father, the King, He has shown off.

The tears push forward as I think about the love He’s whispered this weekend. Ask Me for something big this week. Put a number on it. Look at the percentages and ask Me to defy them. I was going to say yes; now there’s no way I could say no.

So I’ve asked a handful of friends to pray with me. We’re asking for a specific number and a percentage defying week. I’ve looked at life and the odds and tried to estimate how prepared and practical and probable all of this is, but the Spirit keeps inviting me to big trust.

And as I asked the friends, not one of them has said, “Well, we’ll pray for His will.” No one said, “Well, we know He has a plan and maybe this isn’t it and if it isn’t He’ll have something better.”

They all said yes. They all said Absolutely!

We deeply want the will of God, but we trust He will work for that no matter what. And we know He has invited, even commanded, us to ask Him for the desires of our hearts. He wants us to ask! He wants to work fame in our need and His provision!

So we’re all praying for some crazy things this week.

Would you join us?

Because there is surely something in your life you deeply want God to provide. The desires of your heart are known and precious to Him and yet sometimes it’s just so difficult to find courage enough to ask Him. We’d have to admit how much we want it. We’d have to stand face-to-face with His yes or His no. So we nurse the desires and try to tweak them and maybe one day they’ll find fulfillment.

Maybe you need just one close friend. Maybe singleness grows more lonely by the week. Maybe your budget is breaking or your car is almost dead. Maybe your parents are fighting to stay together. Maybe you need the last minute roommate or college acceptance.

And perhaps what asking does for our hearts has less to do with getting what we want and more to do with believing our God is good and loves to give to us. Yes, maybe this is the work He longs to do in our hearts. We ask because He loves us.

Maybe asking has less to do with getting what we want and more to do with believing our God is good and loves to give to us.

“Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn’t a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing. You’re at least decent to your own children. So don’t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?”
Matthew 7:7-11 (The Message)

Beloved, have you asked? And even if you have, will you ask again?

Let’s lift each other up today. If you’d like to share your specific requests, feel free to comment below. If you’d like to hold them close, we’d still love to pray for you, so maybe just tell us below, I’m asking.
