A wise friend once dropped this lil’ nugget in my lap. He said we should spend more time talking to Jesus about the people we’re discipling and ministering to than talking to them about Jesus. That still convicts me deeply and is still a great knock-me-out and down to my knees charge.
Prayer is a challenge for sure. Do I truly believe that Jesus could do just as much and possibly even more with me praying for change than simply me charging in headstrong into battle?? I do believe the Spirit prompts us into battle, but that’s not what I’m driving at. Do you believe God is in control? Do you believe that He hears your prayers and ACTS??? He says that He does…
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
John 14:13-14 “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”
John 16:23-24 “In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”
So let’s look inward a minute and take stock of our askings before Jesus…
-What have you asked Him for today?
-Now, what/when/who have you last asked for God to give the gift of salvation?
-Of the requests you’ve noted list what you think God will or won’t do.
I want to remind you and me both that there are no requests too insignificant for Jesus. I Peter 5:7 “casting all your cares upon Him, because He cares for you.” Cast– The word that also describes how fishermen fling their nets or let fly their line out into the water. To let it go with force. It’s not a dinky dropping of your cares… It’s an active tossing them overboard into the great ocean of the heart of God. If you have some free time today, please stop here and cast your requests upon Him.

When we cast and release these people, issues, wants, or needs onto the Lord we’re saying with our action that we trust Him. That we think highly of Him. We show a humble dependence upon Him when we recognize that we need Him. When we see ourselves as smaller and God as bigger our perspective is shifting closer to reality. He loves a humble attitude and He tells us this all over scripture:
“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God,be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. Foreveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:10-14
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22
Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. Daniel 10:12
So, I want to challenge us this week to pray for the people around us. What can we ask on their behalf? Do they know Jesus? Do they have specific burdens? Let’s make big requests of Jesus for their sake and cast them upon Him. Join me in prayerfully chucking our friends and new acquaintances overboard and trusting that Jesus CARES and is ABLE (and that He could even send a big fish to gobble them up;)!
